Welcome 2012

The year 2011 was very nice to me. Compared to my 2010 or the previous years where I had a lot of struggling for my passport and many other reasons – 2011 had been very nice to me. The year I celebrated Diwali back home after 4 years! The year I got my first Android. Most importantly, the year I left Pune once and for all! The year I made a bold decision to quit a well ‘respected’ company just because they did not give me a transfer to Chennai.


The year India won the Cricket World Cup. The year Sehwag made 200 in a One Day International. The year Chennai Super Kings took over the IPL. The year, that’s special for India – Kabadi (men’s and women’s) World Championship, Asia Cup Hockey, South Asia Football Champions.

The year I saw most exciting movies – The King’s Speech, Rio, Kung Fu Panda 2, The Hangover 2, Cars 2, Pirates of Caribbean 4, Fast Five, Final Destination 5, X-Men – First Class Etc. Although “The Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight” came way before, I saw them only on 2011 and immediately regretted that I missed them earlier!

I could go on – and I wish the luck and the year to continue! Every beginning has an end, so I thank 2011 for being so nice to me! 2012 looks to be an adventurous year – who knows this may be the end of the world! Anyways, let’s hope for the best and pray that 2012 to be as nice as 2011!


So, 2012 is here – the year I may get my first tablet. The year I may get my 2^nd IT Job. The year my close friend is getting married. The year I am going to be back in Chennai! 2012 is a leap year and that’s an FYI to you! One of my school friends – Deepan has a birthday on 29^th February! This should be his 8^th Birthday!

The year I expect the GOD of cricket to score his 100^th 100 and his 50^th 100 (in ODI)! The year where we can expect an Indian win over the Australians in Australia. The year, I hope that the Indian cricket team can be No.1 in Test/ODI again. The year I want Punter and “Kallis” get the hell out of Test Cricket. The year Olympics is coming back! The year I fear may be the last of the GOD’s era.

As in 2011, I expect a lot of good movies in 2012 – The Dark Knight Rises (Batman 3), Men In Black 3, Ice Age: Continental Drift (4) Etc. This July 2012, a double treat of Dark Knight Rises and the Ice Age 4 comes together!

Another interesting day in this year would be the so said 27^th December (or is it 21^st December?). Let’s see what happens!

The "Collector"

After reaching my home with my 5 rupees collection (the new 5 rupees in gold color), I was ashamed to call me a ‘collector’ when my mother showed me a collection of her old coins. I’m getting more and more surprised when I talk to my mother about old stuffs! Some of my other Tamil readers would have read about my earlier blog about my mother. I’m sure everyone would have such an experience, but my mother is completely innocent and had never visited any other town other than our Tirunelveli (apart from a few vacations that I or my brother took her). When asked about how she got so many varieties of coins, she told me that either my father gave her or her brother, my uncle. Yet, it is so surprising that over these many years, I have never had a chance to take a closer look at her collection! Here’s a list of coins that my mother has in her collection!

Starting with – she has 2 Annas (1917), 1-4^th rupee (1918), 1 paise (1959 & 67), 2 paise (1973), 5 paise (1965), 10 paise (1959, 76, 88), 20 (1988, 1869-1948) and 25 paise (1975). Here are some pictures for the new generation who might not have seen these coins at all.

Most of you guys should have seen the 50 paise, but not this one – 1869–1948 coin with Mahatma Gandhi on the back side. The same goes with the 1 rupee coin – quite common these days, but not this one – yet another 1869–1948 coin with Mahatma Gandhi on the back side and a 1978 coin. During the old times, there was no 2 rupees coin. So, I’m jumping to the 5 and 10 rupees coins. 5 rupees old and the new (gold one) are quite common, but have you ever seen a bigger 5 rupee coin? Nearly double the size of the recent coin, the one my mother has is from 1917–1984 coin with Indira Gandhi on the back side. A comparison below.

10 rupees coin – some of you might have seen the recently released 10 rupees coin from the Government of India. Have you seen a 1947–1972 10 rupees coin with the 25 years of freedom image on the back side? Let me show you! [My mother keeps telling me that the older 10 rupees is made of silver and I keep refusing that - judging from the color]

That’s it for the Indian coin collection – let’s move abroad. The nearest country to ours – Sri Lanka. My mother has the 25 cents, 50 cents and 1 rupee coins from Sri Lanka. They’re from 1965, 82 and 72 years respectively. Here they are for your eyes.

Other than these, she has 10 France coin (equivalent to paise – I don’t know how they call paise in France), 20 cents from Singapore, 10 & 50 UAE coins, 1 dime – USA and 4 other unknown coins which I could not figure out from which country/value. Here they are!

I'm sure the actual coin 'collectors' would have a lot more coins like 1 Anna or something like that. But to me, this is a great collection and worth sharing. Come to Tirunelveli to see any of these coins!

The X-Files

It’s been a while since I wrote something here. It is difficult to spend time in Pune after I left Infosys. I also, happened to watch a lot of series after I came to Pune. Some of them are Dexter, How I Met Your Mother, Spartacus, The Mentalist, Prison Break etc. Most of them are crime/thriller and I liked them very much. Rather than watching a movie 2 hours straight, I felt these 25-40 minutes of an episode looked good. Every time when I finish a set of series, I’d think about watching another one and after careful consideration from IMDB, I started watching The X-Files recently. Although it was a fictional series, it started to raise a lot of questions inside me!


The series is about a two FBI agents investigating a series of unexplained phenomena – a set of case files called “X-Files”. The series mostly covers the mystical truths that they believe the ‘government’ hides! Existence of Extraterrestrial, Mutants, Ghosts and Psychic powers/ESP. Although I did complete about 3 seasons without an impact, I started realizing an impact of watching the series – as I started to search for the existence of aliens/ un-explained phenomena via Google. I started with simple image search for UFO and started visiting some of the sites that explained about them. Some of them were interesting while some of them were just BS!


Although none of the articles that I read convinced me of their claims, some of them were a surprise. I always thought that the Egyptian Pyramids were man-made. I still believe so, but I never thought of someone telling an alien story so strongly associated with it! The article about the Giza Pyramid, The Great Sphinx was a surprise for me whereas I never heard about the Nazca lines! It somehow raises a question on how can someone drew lines like human beings/ animals/ some strange lines in the Peru desert without taking an Aerial route? சென்னை அனுபவங்கள்!

சென்ற பதிவில் குறிப்பிட்டது போல் - இதோ என் சென்னை அனுபவங்கள்!




என்னுடைய பால்ய சிநேகிதன் குமாருடன் சென்னை வந்து சேர்ந்த போது சற்று நேரம் என்னால் நம்ப முடியவில்லை – சென்னைல இப்டி கூட Climate இருக்கும் என்று! கோயம்பேட்டிலிருந்து வேளச்சேரி செல்ல D70 பிடித்து, அங்கே கடலென நின்ற traffic-ஐ கடந்து (நீந்தி) எங்கள் வண்டி வேளச்சேரி வந்து சேர, கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒன்னரை மணி நேரம் ஆனது! வியாழன் அன்று வந்து சேர்ந்த நான், அன்று முழுவது பெய்த மழையாலும், என் நண்பன் வீட்டில் கிடைத்த வெகுமதிகளினாலும், எங்கேயும் வெளியே வர முடியவில்லை! வெள்ளி அன்றும் கிட்டத்தட்ட அது போன்ற ஒரு சந்தர்ப்ப சூழ்நிலையால் இரவு வரை வெளியே வர முடியவில்லை.

வெள்ளி இரவு நண்பன் சேதுவை ரயில் நிலையம் சென்று திருநெல்வேலிக்கு செல்லும் நெல்லை எக்ஸ்பிரஸ்-இல் வழியனுப்பிவிட்டு எழும்பூரிலிருந்து பார்க், பின் அங்கிருந்து வேளச்சேரி வரை செல்லும் மின்சார ரயில் பிடித்து, மீண்டும் வீடு வந்து சேர்வதற்கு கிட்டத்தட்ட பத்தரை மணி ஆனது! சனியன்று காலை வேளச்சேரி அருகில் உள்ள “Born Babies” கடைக்குள் புகுந்து மற்றொரு நண்பன் விக்னேஷ்-க்கு பிறந்த குழந்தைக்காக Gift வாங்குவதில் சிறிது நேரம் செலவானது!

அப்படியே அவனுடன் ஆயிரம் விளக்கு பகுதி வரை சென்று அவனுடைய “Hard Disk” replacement செய்துவிட்டு வருகையில் அது என் கண்ணில் பட்டது. நான் சென்னை வந்து சேர்ந்தவுடன் என் நண்பன் சேது சொன்ன முதல் செய்தி: அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம் இன்னும் கொஞ்ச நாட்களில் அந்த இடத்தில் இருக்காது என்றும், ஒரு முறையாவது பார்த்துவிடு என்றும் தான்! ஆயிரம் விளக்கு சென்றுவிட்டு வருகையில் அது கண்ணில் பட, நண்பனுக்கு இருந்த அவசரத்தில் நூலகம் உள்ளே செல்லமுடியாவிட்டாலும் வெளியே இருந்தபடியே ஒரு புகைப்படம் எடுத்து வைத்துக்கொண்டேன்! அடுத்த முறை சென்னை வரும்போது பார்க்கமுடியுமோ முடியாதோ!

இரவுப்பொழுது வெட்டியாகக் கழிந்தாலும், காலையில் ஒரே பரபரப்பு தான். பதினொரு மணிக்கு பூனே வரை செல்லும் பேரூந்தை பிடிப்பதற்கு ஒன்பதரை மணிக்கு வேளச்சேரியில் இருந்து மறுபடியும் D70 பிடித்து கோயம்பேடு வந்து செருவத்ற்கே பத்தேமுக்கால் ஆகிவிட்டது! அங்கிருந்து ஆம்னி Bus Stand செல்லும் இடம் எங்கிலும் தண்ணீர்! முட்டு வரை ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்த ஆற்றில் கிட்டத்தட்ட நீந்தி செல்கையில் பாதசாரிகள் நடக்கும் பாதையில் பெரியதோர் குழி! ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்த ஆற்றில் குழி இருக்கும் இடமோ யாருக்குத் தெரியும்? அத்தனை இடம் இருக்கையில் மிகச்சரியாக அந்த குழிக்குள் விழுந்த முதல் ஆள் நான் தான்!

பிறகு இரண்டு மூன்று பேர் வந்து கை கொடுத்து குழியில் இருந்து என்னைக் காப்பாற்றி(!) வெளியே எடுக்க, கைபேசி மற்றும் கையில் வைத்திருந்த பை, கால்சட்டை என சகலமும் நனைந்துவிட்டது! பேரூந்தை பிடிக்கச்செல்லும் பரபரப்பு காணமல் போய் எப்படிடா இப்டி போயி bus-ல ஏறுவது என்ற எண்ணம் தான் மேலோங்கியது! ஒரு வழியாய் பேரூந்தை பிடித்து, உள்ளேயே கால்சட்டை மாற்றி – அதற்கும் முன்னதாய் ஆம்னி Bus Stand வரை செல்லும் நீரோடையில் நீந்தி என்று ஞாயிறு அன்று காலை முழுவதும் “Adventure” தான்!

பண்டிகையும் இனிய நினைவுகளும்!

Sorry to disappoint the lakhs and lakhs of non-Tamil readers of my blog. This one is going to be in Tamil.

பண்டிகை. நம்மை சந்தோஷமாக இருக்க செய்வதற்காக நமது முன்னோர்கள் குறித்த சில நாட்கள்! அதில் ஒன்றே இந்த தீபாவளி! ஒருவேளை என்னுடைய பழைய ப்ளாக் படித்த சில பேருக்கு தெரிந்திருக்கலாம் – சில வருடமாகவே என்னுடைய தீபாவளி பூனே-வில் தான். சென்ற வருடம் சென்னையில் கொண்டாடியதும் சிலருக்கே தெரியும். இந்த வருடம் நிச்சயம் என்னுடைய வீட்டில் என்று முடிவு செய்து தீபாவளிக்கு நான்கு நாட்கள் முன் என் வீடு போய் சேர்ந்தேன். அடுத்த நாள் என் அண்ணனும் வந்து சேர்ந்தான். தீபாவளி அன்று என் அக்காளும் வந்து சேர்ந்தாள் – கூடவே என் மருமகனும்!

பண்டிகைக் கொண்டாடச் சென்ற எனக்கு, தீபாவளி மட்டுமல்ல – நான் அங்கே இருந்த பத்து நாட்களுமே பண்டிகை போல ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் கொண்டாட்டம் தான்! தன் பிள்ளைகள் அனைவரும் வந்த மகிழ்ச்சியில் என் தாய் தந்தையரும் குளிர்ந்துவிட்டிருன்தனர்! என் அண்ணனும் அவர்களை மேலும் குளிர்விக்க ஒரு புதிய ‘Fridge’ வாங்கி கொடுக்க என் வீட்டில் புதியதோர் வரவாய் அதுவும் ஒரு ஓரமாய்!

தீபாவளி பண்டங்கள் ஒரு புறம், தினம் தினம் சமைக்கும் சாப்பாடு ஒரு புறம் என என் பாடு கொண்டாட்டம் தான்! கிட்டத்தட்ட ஐந்து மாதங்களுக்கு பின் வீட்டுக்குச் சென்ற எனக்கு கண்ணில் காண்பவை யாவுமே அமிர்தமாகத்தான் பட்டது! மகிழ்ச்சி மிகுதியில் ஒரு சுற்று பெருத்தாலும், பூனே போனால் குறயப்போகிறது என்று என்னை நானே சமாதனபடுதிக்கொண்டேன். சிறிது நாட்களில் என் அண்ணனும் சென்னை சென்று விட, அக்கா+மருமகன் திருச்செந்தூர் சென்று விட, நான் மட்டும்.

இந்த இன்டர்நெட் யுகத்தில் அம்மாவை அருகில் அமர வைத்து அவர்களுக்கு பிடித்த பழைய பாடல்களை ‘டவுன்லோட்’ செய்து கொடுத்தேன். அப்படியே அவர்களிடம் பழைய கதைகள் கேட்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். குறிப்பாய் என்னுடைய (கீழே உள்ள படம், சாமி சத்தியமாய் என்னுடையது என்று உறுதியளிக்கிறேன்) சின்ன வயது படம் மீண்டும் என் கையில் கிடைக்க, அதை வைத்து ஆரம்பித்தேன்.

எங்கள் குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்த குழந்தைக்கு ஒரு வயது வரை மொட்டை அடிக்க மாட்டார்கள்! எனக்கும் அப்படித்தான். ஒரு வயதிற்குள் எனக்கு வளர்ந்த முடியின் அளவை தான் நீங்கள் படத்தில் பார்க்கிறீர்கள்! என் பாட்டியும் சிறு வயதில் என்னிடம் கூறுவதுண்டு – “சின்ன வயசுல நீ நிறைய முடி வைத்து பார்பதற்கு சாய்பாபா போல இருப்பாய்” என்று! ஆனால் அந்த படம் ஒரு வயதிற்கு முன்னால் எடுத்த படம் என்பது மட்டும் எனக்கு இவ்வளவு நாள் தெரியாது! எனக்கு ஒரு வயதிற்கு ஒரு வாரம் இருக்கையில் என் தாய் செய்த அந்த காரியம் என்னை பெருமைப்பட வைத்து!

விறு விறுவென என்னைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு பக்கத்தில் உள்ள ஒரு ‘Studio’ சென்ற என் தாய், தன் கழுத்தில் இருந்த ‘Necklace’ஐ கழற்றி எனக்கு போட்டு ஒரு போட்டோவும் எடுத்து வைத்தார்! இன்றும் என்னை நானே இருபத்தியாறு வருடங்களுக்கு முன் பார்க்கையில் ஒரு அதீத சந்தோஷம்! Atleast, சின்ன வயசுலயாவது அழகா இருந்தோமே என்று!!

என் தாயிடம் பழைய விஷயங்களை கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கையில் ஒரு சுவையான விஷயம் என் காதில் விழுந்தது - தீபாவளியை ஒட்டி வந்த ஷஷ்டி பற்றி பேசுகையில்! என் தாய் பிறந்து வளர்ந்தது பழனியில்! அவர்களும் தன் பிறந்த ஊர் பற்றியும் அங்கே நடக்கும் ஷஷ்டி விழா பற்றியும் பெருமிதமாக பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்! அப்போது அங்கே ஷஷ்டி விழாவில் முருகனைப் பாட டாக்டர்.சீர்காழி கோவிந்தராஜன் ஒவ்வொரு வருடமும் வருவார் என்றும், விழா முடிந்த பின்னல் என் தாயின் சித்தி வீட்டிற்கு வந்து அவர்கள் செய்து தரும் ‘கை சுற்று முறுக்கு’ (அவருக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்குமாம்) சாப்பிட்டு விட்டு தான் செல்வாராம்! என் தாயும் அவரிடம் பல முறை உரையாடியிருக்கிரார்கள்!

இனி ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் ஷஷ்டி என்றவுடனோ அல்லது டாக்டர்.சீர்காழி கோவிந்தராஜன் என்றவுடனோ எனக்கு என் தாய் நினைவு நிச்சயம் வரும்! அது போல் இனி ஒவ்வொரு முறை வீட்டிற்கு செல்லும் போதும் இது போன்று பழைய கதைகளைக் – இனிமையான நினைவுகளைச் சேகரிக்கவும் தவரப்போவதில்லை!

அடுத்த பதிவில் என்னுடைய மூன்று நாள் சென்னை அனுபவங்களை தொகுக்க இருக்கிறேன்!

Lost

I know I have lost something. As soon as I realized I missed my home, I realized I lost something. But the thing is I don’t know what I lost. As days passed by, I slowly started to think what I lost. In pursuit of my lost, I guess I lost myself.
