The X-Files

It’s been a while since I wrote something here. It is difficult to spend time in Pune after I left Infosys. I also, happened to watch a lot of series after I came to Pune. Some of them are Dexter, How I Met Your Mother, Spartacus, The Mentalist, Prison Break etc. Most of them are crime/thriller and I liked them very much. Rather than watching a movie 2 hours straight, I felt these 25-40 minutes of an episode looked good. Every time when I finish a set of series, I’d think about watching another one and after careful consideration from IMDB, I started watching The X-Files recently. Although it was a fictional series, it started to raise a lot of questions inside me!

The series is about a two FBI agents investigating a series of unexplained phenomena – a set of case files called “X-Files”. The series mostly covers the mystical truths that they believe the ‘government’ hides! Existence of Extraterrestrial, Mutants, Ghosts and Psychic powers/ESP. Although I did complete about 3 seasons without an impact, I started realizing an impact of watching the series – as I started to search for the existence of aliens/ un-explained phenomena via Google. I started with simple image search for UFO and started visiting some of the sites that explained about them. Some of them were interesting while some of them were just BS!

Although none of the articles that I read convinced me of their claims, some of them were a surprise. I always thought that the Egyptian Pyramids were man-made. I still believe so, but I never thought of someone telling an alien story so strongly associated with it! The article about the Giza Pyramid, The Great Sphinx was a surprise for me whereas I never heard about the Nazca lines! It somehow raises a question on how can someone drew lines like human beings/ animals/ some strange lines in the Peru desert without taking an Aerial route? Out of all the websites, I found http://www.exitmundi.nl/exitmundi.htm to be interesting. Do visit if you find sometime!

Do you believe in the existence of Alien/ Mutant/ Ghosts?

Sorry to disappoint the lakhs and lakhs of non-Tamil readers of my blog. This one is going to be in Tamil.

Lost

I know I have lost something. As soon as I realized I missed my home, I realized I lost something. But the thing is I don’t know what I lost. As days passed by, I slowly started to think what I lost. In pursuit of my lost, I guess I lost myself.

A Very Special Day

I woke up at around 10AM and realized that today is going to be a big day. Yes, I was about give my Oracle “Programming with PL/SQL Certification” – upon completion will make me an Oracle Certified Associate. Bench days – nothing special in office except for my preparations towards the big day. $125 is nearly equal to 6500 bucks. You can’t loose that by just failing in an exam. So, this time my preparation was good enough. Comparing to my first Oracle exam – Introduction to Oracle 9i – where I just studied the DUMPS (A set of questions which we expect in the exam), I actually ‘studied’ the materials. I learned new things and I practiced them at home.

So, I went to the office and prepared again. My exam was scheduled at 3:45 PM, 15th of September, 2011. Until 3PM that day, I did not complete my preparations. By 3PM, I finished the materials and also, the DUMPS. It’s a rainy season here in Pune from the month June. It should have been finished by the end of August. It was a sunny day, so I did not take any of my jerkins or rain coats. I reached office at around 12PM and studied until 3PM. I started towards the exam center at 3:05 PM. It was drizzling at that time. I thought, ok, it’s not going to be a big rain. But, I was wrong.

Soon after I reached Wipro Phase2, it started to rain a little heavier than expected. Ok, this can be manageable. I can still make in time. I continued riding my Bajaj Caliber (Not exactly mine, a friend of mine) along with my fellow colleague and a good friend – Vinodh Alagan. My thoughts were still on the questions that I just viewed. The rain got a little heavy when I reached WAKAD. I still thought I can make it on time and finish my OCA. But, when I reached the whistling palms, I realized that I am not going to make it. I experienced one of the heaviest rains that I ever saw before from Whistling Palms until my room. I felt like I was inside a heavy water falls. All me (Except my head because helmet is a mandatory in Infy) was drenched in the rain – none was left dry. I decided to go to my room and change before I reach the exam center. It was 3:30 PM when I reached my room.

I got a little time to change and head back towards the exam center. I changed everything and I decided to leave my helmet behind because helmet is not mandatory while driving in Pune. Also, the rain had showed some mercy and stopped a while. I had my Jerkin and a rain pant – so I have no chance of getting drenched. We started again from my room and as soon as I took the first left towards the exam center from my room – the worst was waiting for me. I felt myself again in a water falls. With no helmet, I literally could not see anything before me. With all my rain gears, I still felt I’m getting drenched.

We tried calling the exam center to inform them about our late arrival, but he never picked the phone. We were running late and the rain got worse and worse. I couldn’t go beyond 40 km/h and if I had ever gone beyond that, I’d have ended up in a hospital for sure. It was 3:50 when I was just 2 KMs away from the center – when I got stuck up in a massive traffic. When I was waiting for the traffic to clear, I thought about it for a while – everything before we started for exam was normal and as soon as we started for the exam, everything went wrong. May be, it’s God’s will that we do not make the center on time!

It took 15 minutes to clear the traffic and I was about to enter in to the street where the exam center is waiting for me and welcomed by a surprise. The road was normal the day before – when we went to pay the money and confirm the schedule. Today, it was not. We were not allowed inside the street – a big rope was tied from the both ends and before us were about 10 to 15 vehicles waiting. I saw the road to be under construction and it looked like they’ll not allow us inside. The person aside came to the waiting vehicles and asked them to take diversion, but we never did. Another 5 minutes of wait and then they opened the rope and let us inside. It looked liked an organized way to avoid traffic jam inside the small road.

When we finally reached the exam center at 4:20PM, the person told us that the power is not available and we’ll have to wait for about 15 minutes. He also told us that if it does not come, then he’ll allow us the write the exam in the back-up mode. We waited outside the center for 15 minutes and luckily, the power did come. We started our exam at around 5PM and finished at around 6PM. Happy that everyone qualified and we became the Oracle Certified Associate.

The story is not yet over. I have to mention here that the time we reached the exam center – 4:20 PM until the time we left from there – 6:30PM, there was no rain. We started towards our room and as soon as I hit the main road, it started to rain again. It became worse when we were just 10 minutes away from our room. We did not stop and got all wet again. The story is not yet over – I have to admit that I never learned any lesson from the above story. There was no power in our flat only and we had to bring an electrician to fix this. I got drenched again while doing so and changed again, got drenched again while bringing the dinner. It was a rainy day after 3PM that day, but then it was one of the memorable days. We are an Oracle Certified Associate!

Migration of the Tamilan: Curse of the Pune

There were days where I dreamt of going outside my hometown. Until my first job (21 years), I have not visited any cities other than my own hometown. I don’t know the reason – but I just dreamt of living in a different city other than my hometown. Chennai was the first one outside my hometown. After Chennai, my dreams started going bigger. That’s exactly how I ended in Pune. Now, these (current) are the days where I dream of going back to my hometown. It atleast took me 2 years to realize why people say “Home sweet home”. It’s been more than 2 years since I started to struggle to find a way for home.

My training in Infosys started at Mysore. A place where almost every infoscions wants to be forever – I can say proudly. Every one of them will have the memories of Mysore. With those, when we heard about our Pune postings, I was somewhat happy. My dreams of exploring India (ok, living in a different city) started to take a picture. It was 1st of August 2007 when I reached Pune. I remember when I reached Chennai during 2004, it was raining. It happened in Pune as well. When I reached Pune, it was raining all along until we took a taxi and reached our hotel rooms. I should say I was in immediate love with Pune.

Bench days were awesome, but then some of you might remember my passport struggling. Because of the offer letter from Infosys, I missed the police verification and then I had to struggle more than 3 years to get my passport. But, that was my only worry in Pune. My first and only project in Infosys was Level3 Communications. Wonderful project I must say. I had the wonderful team which somewhat kept me going when sometime I felt like I’m in an alien world. I had been under some of the great leaders in Infosys and also, worst. When the best left and the worst came, I started looking for transfer. Transfer, in this world of Infosys, is impossible – they said. That’s nonsense!

Being a stupid, I always said nothing is impossible. So I tried and tried and tried – only to get tired. Now, after being in Pune for more than 4 years, first time, I felt – the one who said “Transfer is impossible” made sense. It is indeed, impossible to get a transfer to Chennai. When my manager said that an official transfer to Chennai is impossible, I thought of going through the personal transfer. So, I contacted a HR person and per him, although there are 5 options to submit a personal transfer, I can use only one out of 3. The reasons on the personal transfer were: “Health – Self”, “Health – Parents”, “Marriage”, “Other Reason” and “Personal Reason”. The last two options were ruled out by the HR and he said that I should choose any one of the first 3.

I’m healthy; I don’t have any health issues other than some frequent headaches. That rules out the first option. I’m still single, so that rules out the 3rd option. I’m left with the last choice – Health – Parents. My parents are above 60 years of age and are diabetic patients. I thought submitting a doctor certificate would help me. So, I asked them to contact our family doctor and ask him to give me a certificate. I got it and when I uploaded that in the personal transfer request, I got it rejected saying I need to submit more supporting documents. They would not be able to precede that with just a certificate from doctor. Ok, that made sense. I then asked my parents to send me their prescriptions and other medical bills and other records which a normal diabetic patient would have.

I submitted those – as soon as I received them from my parents. Now, the next problem came. The HR who was responsible for my personal transfer went on leave. I do not know the process of how a personal transfer request work, but it took me 1 ½ weeks to change another HR’s name on that request. The new HR said that he’d talk to the Infosys doctors and would let me know. When he finished checking, he said the same thing – upload more medical ‘records’. Now, I seriously doubted if my understanding of English got worse! I forgot what’s a medical ‘report’ or ‘record’.

Without doubt, I figured that they are not going to give me a transfer. Whatever the document that I’m going to upload, they are going to still need more and more documents. I even uploaded my parent’s Voter ID card – just to let them know that they are above 60 years of age. I’m sure that whatever the document that I uploaded had enough ‘record’ to prove that they are diabetic patients. A person who’s in a HR position or a person who’s a Doctor should have enough education to understand this simple fact – they are old and diabetics. Yet, the policies! Or, should I say Politics?

With utter frustration, I’m writing this. This is in fact, not at all a frustration when compared to the first a letter I typed (when I was still in the project) to upload in the transfer portal! Here’s what it is:

I need a transfer. Why? I need a transfer because, I don’t like Pune. I need a transfer because, I don’t want to stay away from my family, who’s desperately in need of a support. I need a transfer because, I don’t speak Hindi. I need a transfer because, I’m overloaded. I need a transfer because, there’s no one here who can understand me. There are still some poor souls back home, they’ll understand me.

Why the hell are you writing this? I’m writing this because, I need to upload a document in my personal transfer request. I’m writing this because, I don’t have any ‘valid’ reason that ‘I’ think the organization will accept for a transfer. I’m writing this because, I’m frustrated. I’m writing this because, I’m not so good at oral communication and ‘I’ believe I’m good with the written communication.

Where do you need a transfer? One and the only place – Chennai.

Well, it’s been 4 years since I have come to Pune. It’s been 4 years since I joined Infosys. It’s been 4 years since I joined the project “Level3”. It’s been 4 years since I’m happy.

Frustrating work. Alright. We have a project party guys. Yea! At last! There you go. Now, you go to the project party where you are the only fellow who does not know Hindi. People who accompany you always speak in Hindi. Isn’t that so nice to hear? Wow, what a language this Hindi is! It’s all you talk about!

How did you manage to stay in Pune this long? If you can stay in Pune for 4 years, why not 4 more years? Oh. That’s the question I don’t know the answer yet. I don’t know how I managed these 4 years.

Is your career important or your personal transfer important? Your growth will be affected if you get a transfer. Oh, is it? I’m not a tall guy, yet, I don’t want any more growth. I’ve grown enough and I know what is important.

What are you going to do if they deny you a transfer? Very simple question. I wish I expect such simple questions on my next interview.

I know I need more guts to upload these kind of documents in the portal. But, who knows – I might get one very soon!

Numbers and Perspectives

From my Infy Blogs - targeting wider audience.

The thought of writing about numbers and perspectives didn’t occur to me because I’m a mathematician (no, no… No advertisement!). But, whenever I see a number or a set of numbers, I can’t resist myself to sum’em up!

0                   This doesn’t come up in the count – but this is one of the greatest discoveries by an Indian. So, in my perspective, I thought I should give 0 the first place! The super power which ‘nulls’ when multiplied by any number! They call ‘Duck’ if you are out without scoring in Cricket! Let’s move on and get off the mark!

1                   Even though 0 comes before this in the whole number series, we call 1 the first! The position, you can say, everyone wants to become! The first unaccounted prime number; first odd number. I can say she’s unchangeable as she gives exactly the same that you multiply.

2                   The sum of my ‘Date’ of birth (D+D). She has the capability of converting everything (odd, even, prime) to an even number when multiplied. The first even number in the counting.

Now, when talking about even and odd, literally, Odd is something very odd(!) and even is something that should balance. Actually, in my perspective, the ‘odd’ numbers are balanced. When multiplied by an odd, it gives odd and when multiplied by an even, it gives even. Whatever you want – that’s balanced! So, I call 1, 3, 5... to be even numbers. 2, 4, 6… all gives even number only, when multiplied by even or odd. So they are “odd”! So, why they named these wrongly? That’s odd!

3                   The first interesting number to me. You multiply any number with this number and sum up the total. It’ll either give you 3 or 6 or 9. Nothing else. In cricket, they call a ‘hat-trick’ if you take 3 wickets in 3 balls. Associating cricket with 3 again, David Shepherd’s unlucky score – 111 has 3 one! Is 3 really an unlucky number or 1? Even Lord Shiva comes with 3 eyes.

4                   The sum of my Date of Birth (DD+MM+YYYY). Again, an even number which gives only even number when multiplied. The first number which is divisible in the count. A boundary in cricket. Infosys is my 4th employer. My cubicle has 4 seats:-D. They say 4 is the smallest composite number. 4 remembers me a square. Sometimes I remember a video on which, when asked for how many sides does a triangle have, a fellow answered – “umm… Damn, 4?”

5                   I liked this number very much in my school days because it’s easy to say the 5 tables! The product always ends with either 5 or 0. Pentagon or a star can be associated with 5. The Olympic rings are 5. When you divide any number by 5, it’ll give you either no or a finite decimal. The result is not infinitive like when you divide 2 by 3. When I was doing my schoolings, the government used to say “3 children per family”. So, 3 children and 2 parents make 5, a perfect family! And my family is perfect. This is not applicable now! :-P

6                   Six. Raise your two hands up! Nowadays 6 makes me remember Yuvraj Singh! Poor Stuart Broad! Divisible rule for 6 is also very easy to learn – anything that’s divisible by 2 and 3 is divisible by 6. The sum of the first 3 natural numbers is 6. Hexagon! Honey bee-hive!

7                   I would call this number an adamant or non-flexible. When it comes to 7, I feel it is un-controllable. One of the prime numbers for which there’s no divisible rule (Well, I guess there’s one, but it is very very very very hard to understand). It makes me feel like a 7 year old kid not obeying to parents! Rainbow has 7 colors. The 7 raagas – “Saptha Swaram”. 7 Wonders!

8                   Unlucky. One word, which describes 8. In my perspective, most of the people in the world think 8 is an unlucky number. In my case, 8’s very lucky. In other words, wherever I go – 8 follows. Most of my register number during schoolings summed up to 8. Roll number in College is 8. My employee # in Infy sums up to 8. Infact, if you replace 1 for A, 2 for B and so on and sum up my first name, it gives 8! Eight also remembers me of the 8 Lakshmi’s in Hinduism – the “Ashta Lakshmis”.

9                   Even though 8 is my lucky number, I always wished 9 should be. 9 remembers me Chemistry! Well, I’m a very poor chemistry student (Scored 44 out of 150!) and whenever a chemical reaction happens, the professor would tell us that the H2O just evaporates. Disappears. 9 also evaporates when you add any number to it. Disappears! Add 1 to 9 and you’ll get 1 again (Don’t tell me 9+1=10. 10 is again 1+0 = 1). Add 9 to 9 and you’ll get 9 again! Wow! I love it! Nonagon or “Tata Nano” remembers 9 to me!

PS: A few of the number factors were taken from wiki.
